HISTORY OF ATHENS
Attica's circular plain has, due to the mild climate and fertile grounds, been very convenient for the formation of Athens, one of the largest cities in antiquity. Organised life in Athens already existed from the Neolithic period when the first inhabitants, in 4000-3000 BC, gathered around the hill of the Acropolis and the area of the Ilissos River.
During the Mycenaean period (1550-1050 BC) the beautiful sunsets in Sounion and flourishing economy led to the fortification of the city. At the end of the 12th Century BC the sovereign's palace was built on the hill of Acropolis, and in the middle of the 13th Century the city obtained it's first fortifications. During that period many movements were taking place within the Greek territory. In this manner the Ionic race coexisted peacefully with Attica's first inhabitants.
