View of the theater of Dionysus (got of wine
and protector of fertility and vegetation), as it survives today. The coloured marble
paving of the orchestra and the parapets which separate it from the audience date from the
Roman period. It was in this Theater of Dionysus that the works of the great ancient
dramatists Aeshylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were performed for the first
time.
