| THE METAXAS ERA
The National Schism continued to
divide Greek politics and society in the mid-1930s. King George
chose General Metaxas to head a new government in 1936, and
Metaxas's dictatorial regime finally restored public order. The cost
was an extended period of one-party government and repression of
human rights that set the stage for more bitter political
divisiveness after World War II.
